Poppy Charlton

Poppy joined BRAVA as a trained actor, having attended trained at Oxford School of Drama and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Whilst she had lots of stage acting experience, Poppy had little understanding of the VO landscape so we worked intensively with her across our Narration, Commercial and Character Core Modules. Since completing her training with us, Poppy continues to book VO work across radio, theatre, TV, and commercials.

Poppy said:

"When I first reached out to BRAVA, I was in the midst of drama school, and COVID had just struck. The acting industry had suddenly become uncertain, with very little work to look forward to upon graduation. Melissa had been sharing her experiences with us at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and the work sounded vibrant and exciting compared to the bleak reality we were facing. 

BRAVA's training is top-notch and my experience with them was nothing short of excellent. We worked in small groups, which allowed for a lot of individual attention – something I thrive on. The range of professionals we interacted with were incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and friendly. It always felt like a safe space to explore and learn. From the initial sessions to recording the final demo reel, BRAVA was right there with us, cheering us on and celebrating our progress. 

Voiceover is such a valuable skill for an actor, and I can't imagine anyone teaching it better than the BRAVA team.  Drama school taught me a lot about voice, vocal work, and character, but voiceover is a different beast. Without BRAVA's guidance, I wouldn't have known where to start. 

I now understand how the industry works and what is expected of me, and this has alleviated a lot of the nerves and uncertainties. BRAVA helped me identify my niche within the industry, which has been incredibly useful for marketing myself and applying for jobs. BRAVA has also positively impacted my acting career. A big part of voiceover work involves character creation, which has been beneficial for my multi-rolling and developing larger-than-life characters on stage. My vocal flexibility has improved, allowing me to create different characters that match their physicality.
